Asthma and Yoga:
The incidence of asthma as well as its intensity has been on the increase. Factors such as complicated lifestyles, food habits, psychological tension, loneliness, emotional hypersensitivity, negative emotions like fear, jealousy, anger and resentment could contribute to this phenomenon. Other possible causative factors are exposure to drugs, medicines, dust, animal hair and environmental pollution.
Yoga approach:
Asthma can be eliminated with the help of yogic techniques. Recovery is possible with a disciplined approach. Yoga advocates the following techniques to combat asthma and respiratory disorders
Asanas: (yogic postures) that help increase stamina and simultaneously strengthens the chest and spinal column, enhance digestive system, and enhance heart-lung capacities.
Surya namaskar: (salutation to the sun) a set of twelve postures that tone the joints, muscles, and internal organs and restores the energy balance.
Pranayama: (Breath control) strengthens the entire nervous system, restitutes balance to the autonomic nervous system and enhances voluntary control over the respiratory system. It improves the mental state too.
Shatkarma: (Purification) ensures the balance between the three doshas (humors) to dissipate illness condition.
Yoga nidra: (Psychic sleep) and Shavasana (corpse pose) induce relaxation and increase awareness of the respiratory process.
Meditation: With mantra chants, has a direct effect on nervous system and will help surface hidden fears and complexes.
Note: Adopt a diet that strengthens the digestive system without straining it. Measures to improve physical fitness.
