Diabetes and Yoga:
Diabetes, the metabolic disorder, is characterized by increased sugar levels in the blood and urine, excessive thirst, frequent urination, acidosis, and wasting. According to yogic science, a weak and sluggish digestive system triggered primarily by faulty diet, overeating, obesity and sedentary lifestyles can result in diabetes.
Yoga approach: Yoga prescribes the following techniques, to be practiced for at least 4 to 6 months, based on the ability and fitness level of each individual:
Asanas: (Yogic postures) influence the functions of the endocrine system, which not only controls bodily functions but also influences emotions and attitudes. They help correct overactive or sluggish glands to instill a more positive outlook to life. It also fine-tunes the circulatory system, nervous system, respiratory system and the digestive system.
Pranayama: (Breathing technique) advocates a deep and slow breathing cycle to increase the lung capacity and remove stagnant air from the respiratory system. The movement of the diaphragm, during deep and slow breathing, has a massaging effect on the internal organs. It further regulates the time taken for the oxygen from the lung to be carried into the blood stream and vice versa.
Yoga nidra: (Psychic sleep) and simple meditation techniques rest and rejuvenate the mind to accord clarity of thought and relief from tension. It further helps change negative attitudes towards self and others. Old habits can be changed through sankalpa (resolution) a component in this practice.
Please note that all the yoga postures and yoga techniques mentioned in this web site are to be practiced only after prior medical clearance, and under the supervision and guidance of a qualified yoga teacher.
