Hyperthyroidism and Yoga:

Hyperthyroidism or thyrotoxicosis, is a syndrome caused by a hyperactive thyroid gland in combination with excessive production of thyroxin. It is assumed that imbalance in thyroxin homeostasis between thyroid hormones and peripheral tissues, stress, mental strain and trauma can trigger onset.

Yoga complements modern medicine to combat this condition. Some yoga techniques used to combat thyroid problems include.

Surya namaskar: Salutation to the sun - a powerful tool which brings stability to the body. It also loosens and tones up the muscles and joints effectively. It massages and stimulates the internal organs to bring balance to the mental and physical energy (pingala, ida nadi).

Asanas: Specific yogic postures.

Pranayama: Techniques to regulate respiration, improve awareness, increase the lung capacity, and also stimulate thyroid gland.

Shatkarma: Cleansing technique of Kunjal neti kriya (nasal cleansing) reduces tension in facial muscles and also has a cooling effect on the brain. It reduces levels of anxiety, anger and depression.

Yoga nidra: Psychic sleep and meditation such as ajapa japa or mental chanting of the mantra Soham.

Please note that all the yoga postures and yoga techniques mentioned in this web site are to be practiced only after prior medical clearance, and under the supervision and guidance of a qualified yoga teacher.
